Necrotik Fissure — Hypnopompik Visions
The set appeared in both a physical version, as a twelve CDR set that came in an edition of twenty. Or a digital download. I’m reviewing the download version, but from the pictures I’ve seen the box set looks well presented- featuring are 12 labelled & pro pressed CDR’s in a DVD case sized box- which features colour cover art, that seemingly takes in what looks like a ropy looking peacock, metal pipes, monster teeth, and a black sun…quite what it all means I’m unsure?!, but it’s fairly distinctive looking. And As of this review, the label still has copies of the boxset left.
Over the twelve CDR’s are fourteen tracks- so we mainly get longer ‘walls’ that fill up a whole disc, coming between one hour & nearing eighty. But we also get a few half an hour to forty minute tracks too, and these come two a piece on the discs. I’m not going to go through each & every track here, as I feel that not particularly conducive or appeal, but I will discuss a few of the different types of ‘walls’ we have here to get an idea of what to expect.
So first up on disc number one we have Appearance of the Shadow People Parts 1 & 2. "Part one" is a blend of deep churning roast, rolling judder matter, and searing ‘n’ hissing grain rush. "Part Two" sees a fixed-yet- constantly descending deep noise drone, surrounded by fizzing thinness & muffled rumble.
On disc four we have the over hours worth of "Shiva's Aconite"- this finds rapid-yet- buried almost harmonic drone ‘n’ simmer, which is encased in a mass of caustically hissing & feasting static.
Disc sixes "Cramps" is a wonderfully bothersome & brutal wall. It brings together a crudely oscillating & careering blend of raging ‘n’ ragged bass tones, with skittering ‘n’ manically rushing mid ranged textures. It feels akin to putting ones face against a huge buffeting & spinning roller from a shoe shine machine, or similar. The bass tones seem to drill into your jaw, and the rushing textures create both a feeling rapidity & teeth-gritting tension.
Disc "Elevens Descending Paranoid" has quite a fitting title. With it’s enclosing & unsettling mixer of distant, brooding & ill-defined bass rumble ’n’ wonder. And a constantly descending mass of feasting static snow. The track feels akin to getting more and more lost in a snowstorm, as you try to make out your surrounds. And all you can make out in faint shapes & buildings; but when you move towards them, instead of finding them you go deeper & deeper into the crackle bound static white-out.
So the Hypnopompik Visions set offers up a nice selection of fairly varied wall-craft. With most of the tracks here been set, firm & dense in their structure, yet they often have a nice line of either brood or unsettlement running under the surface. It’s certainly a talent to put out a box of this size, that features both consistent & varied wall-matter, and aside from one or two tracks, I must say this is mostly successful.
