Naughty — Nylon Insomnia
Though this is the first release from the Naughty project Charlotte already has been involved with more than a few walled noise & noise projects of the last few years. Most notable of these is Absurde with her husband Julien, as well as solo projects(The Girl with a Stanley Knife, Sleep Paralysis and Flux Nocturne) and a few other collaborations: Flesh Clocks(with Julien) and Cuttings ( with Clive Henry).
The cassette offers up two side slice of fairly fixed & full walled noise. First up on side B we have “I Can’t Sleep"- this wall brings together a deep, meaty & simmering judder, with a crust a thinner jittering ‘n’ semi skipping static. The low end creates a nicely intense & taut vice like grip on your attention, while the static crust adds rewarding smaller textural detail to the mix. As the track progresses both elements seem to blur & meld slightly, but I’m not sure if this is really happen, or it’s just a trick of the ‘wall’. Also possibly too the low-end does gets bit more buffeting ‘n’ billowing in its feel.
Flipping over to side B and we have the track “You Won’t Sleep”. This ‘wall’ brings together a fairly similar ranged collection of low-to-mid range noise textures- we have the following: a tightly wound billowing, a slightly crisp rotating jitter, a caught buffeting, and a continually tumbling judder. Together these create a very dense & unforgiving bit of ‘wall-making’, that pulls you in with it’s layer detail, as your mind tries to define & analyse first one pattern & then another.
Nylon Insomnia is a great opening shot from this new project, as it offers up two consistent & engrossing walls. I very much look forward to hearing more from this project in the near future, and it’s great to see another female artist active with-in the wall noise scene.
