From 2025, My Only Friend's a Corpse is a lo-fi/punked mix of horror, comedy, and dark fantasy. It regards a runaway teen metalhead who finds a one-eyed ‘n’ fixed rictus flayed flesh corpse. It turns out it can talk and convinces him to go on a ramshackle quest- for vengeance & seemingly saving mankind. The budget is less than a shoestring, but it has both ghoulish invention, charm, and a few neat practical effects. Here from MVD Visual is a Blu-ray release of the film, with a commentary track & interview/ behind the scenes featurette..
The film's the first feature from Jack Bayless, who wrote, directed, and did the special effects for the picture. His previous credits include doing effects for the likes of Very Flattened Christmas (2024).
The picture runs at just over the seventy-minute mark, being largely pacy/ eventful in its unfolding. After the pre-credits regarding the corpse's encounter with its first victim, we see long haired/ leather jacket wearing Danny (Sam Christensen) running away from his home with his past-out alcoholic dad.
We see Danny stumbling along in the darkness- he walks past a dumpster, where a bonny/ flayed corpse is propped up in the dumpster itself; we see the dead victim from the pre-credits. Danny flinches and starts walking away, then a raspy voice calls him back- he thinks it’s some kind of set up/ joke, until the corpse's hand reaches out- and he gets rapid images of an apocalypse….so he agrees to help the corpse, who we later find out is named George.
As the film unfolds, the pair steal a truck, visit a diner- where we find out George can both melt & kill folk with his one eye. They meet a masked fishman, a helpful moustached man, a dressed-by-dollar shop female spirit of nature, god, and a few other folks.
The gore is fairly minimal and cheap, but effective enough in HG Lewis manner- there’s some organs pulled out of chest cavities, a head explosion, a neck slicing, and a very dodgy/ rubbery looking god.
Christensen is a likeable enough lead- this is seemingly his first role, oh, and he also voices George- doing a good job as a raspy dead guy. The rest of the cast is fine, as zero-budget fare goes, with notable mentions going to the big curly-haired ‘n’ moustached man who's following the pair, changing into something truly horrific off-screen, until the final act. All in all, My Only Friend's a Corpse is an entertaining mix ‘n’ blend of ghoulish horror, low-grade fantasy, and comedy.
On the extras side, we get a few things. First off is a commentary track- it features director/ writer/ effects artists Jack Bayless, lead actor Sam Christensen, and one of the film's assistant directors. Unfortunately, the track often suffers from too many people talking at the same time, a fair bit of uncontrolled laughter, and gaps in talking. Though I did manage to gain some worthy/ interesting details. We move from finding out that the film started as a short, so the corpse wasn’t really meant for a 70 min film. They point out friends in small cameos, and discuss items of too-small clothing brought for unfilmed scenes. Later on, they discuss the lighting in some scenes; they point out the director's cameo, and how they got to use the great creepy/ rundown building at the end of the film. My Only Friend's a Corpse is certainly full of punky energy & low-budget flair, and if you enjoy where horror, fantasy and comedy meet, it’s well worth a look. Jack Bayless is most certainly a promising young filmmaker, and I am very much looking forward to seeing what he does next.
