Lea Cummings & Sarah Glass — Night Of The Bloody Antler( DVDR & CDR)
Before we get into the visuals & sonics of the film & soundtrack, I think it’s best to introduce the two people behind the project. Lea Cummings has been creating work since the early 2000’s, and is really one of the mostly widely known figures with-in the British noise scene- with his most know project been Kylie Minoise. Sarah Glass is connected to projects such as Grimalkin555, Okishima Island Tourist Association, The Fnords, Opaque, Nosferatu Pharmaceuticals, Kovorox Aktion Group- and many of these find her working with Mr Cummings
The two discs come in a clear double DVD case that features double sided colour pro printed sleeve. On the front cover we get a stacked picture of someone dressed in a boiler suit, holding an axe & wearing a deer mask. And on the back cover a picture of a figure standing on a small bridge against a bleak woodland back drop. Both discs feature pro printed fronts, and on the whole it’s a very pro looking package.
So moving onto to the discs themselves- the first one takes in just the film. This 66 minute film is a tale of a young man & women who are meant to meeting a group of fellow hikers for a walk- we have a chatting & buoyant female, and a more reserved & quite male. I won’t really want to give too much else away about the films plot, as I think it’s the type of film you need to know as little as possible about. The films a mix of interactions between the pair, lengthy trips into dread filled psychedelic imagery, & slasher point of view shots. And on the whole it’s a charming enough slice of low-budget film making with both the lads giving fairly good performances.
The second disc takes in the soundtrack, and this is by Nosferatu Pharmaceuticals- which brings together Cummings & Glass. This disc takes in a 56 minute playing time and seventeen tracks- these are a dread filled & heady mix lo-if retro synth sound tracking, and brooding noise craft. On the whole it’s a most enjoyable collection of tracks which manages to stand well in their own right away from the film it’s self- so if you enjoy lo-fi, retro 70’s/ 80’s horror sound tracking this will be right up your street. In the past this project has only ever released one other release, and that came in the form of 2011’s Banishes Groundless Fear, Wretchedness And Thought, so it’s great to see it return for this soundtrack.
All in all I must say I was quite taken by both the film & the soundtrack, and if you enjoy mirco-budget film-making with elements of horror & psychedelic visuals I’m sure you’ll enjoy this too. It can be purchased direct from here for the very reasonable price of £12.00 for the two disc set.
