King Futile — Zen As Fuck
Zen As Fuck is release number three from the lo-fi/outsider folk project King Futile. Behind it is Lea Cummings (Kylie Minoise, Official Music Team, etc.). The album takes in eight tracks, featuring basic strummed-yet-enduring structures, with the lyrics being decidedly sweary, morosely comic, and sarcastic.
The album appears on Lea's own label, Kovorox Sound. It comes in the form of a CDR, with artwork similar to the project's other albums- in a photocopied sleeve, with white Sharpie writing against a grey backdrop.
We go from crude strumming blues & billowing singing of “Fears” where Lea lists various types of phobias like thunder, numbers, cheese, sunlight, before concluding he’s not ‘Fucking scared of you’. There’s the slow ‘n’ steady strum of “Staying in Bed”, where he sings about possibly climbing Everest or getting rid of poverty; instead, he’ll sleep in bed dreaming everyone is dead.
On “Columbo” he roughly warbles & semi croons out the track's title over very slowed/ almost staggering to a stop strum fest. And on the instrumental track “Zelda 3” we find a selection of gloomy, at times almost discordant tumblings.
Zen As Fuck follows the sonic tone & lyrical feel of the first two King Futile, but with maybe a slightly more woozy to glum edge.
