James M Creed — Tending

Tending collects together four pieces for modern ensemble by British-American composer/ guitarist James M Creed. The CD release features on its cover a monochrome photo of two figures walking along a misty mountain scape. And this is most apt, as many of the pieces have a drifting across a hazy landscape feel- where details, shape, and subtle traces of melody slowly come into view.

Going from his Bandcamp, James has been musically active since 2020, having twelve releases to his name to date. The four pieces here date from 2024 and 2025, with runtimes between fifteen and twenty-five minutes a piece.

The CD opens with “Double Quintet and Duo”, and is played by Standard Issue & Outline Ensemble- taking in a total of twelve players. The work is plotted out in very slow paino rolls & tolls, light string simmers, horn drifts- with the occasional neck dart, air flit, or overlong dwells. It’s truly a lovely & lush work- with a melody sitting somewhere between lulling and sad.

“Sextet And Solo” is played by Standard Issue. It features seven players, with Mr Creed playing guitar. It opens with this circling, steadily growing tone- which at first is rather piercing. As the track continues, a steadily throbbing warmth seems to emit- but also there is a feeling of bitter sweetness in some of the horn work. And really, the rest of the piece remains seesawing between warmth/ harmony and uncertainty/regret.

Finally, we have “Octet: After five bars by Rebecca Clarke, Composer” which is played by To Your Ear Collective. It’s for eight players, including two guitarists. It’s built around steadily treaded out/ at points sustained piano notation, sparse string hovers. As it progresses, the pacing of the key notation grows- becoming more urgent/ locked with moments of galloping rush(maybe field recordings or guitar feedback), and dense string hovers.
