Hammemit — Spires Over The Burial Womb
The tracks are built around muffled chanted monk like vocals and dammed mournful vocalising, undistorted yet discordant guitar hover and shimmers, tons of reverb and echo, grim pickings of lute & organ bleak hazes. All of which is hazed and smeared together into a slow moving dreamy grim sonic soup. The album certainly sets a very distinct feeling of dammed or ruined religious devotion and decaying or crumbling churches/Monasteries that drags the listener deep into its barren belly. The problem is it pretty much stays at the same pace and sound through-out, unlike the Emit stuff which often devilishly shifted pace and tone.
All told an interesting grim open shot from Hammemit that conjures up a very deep and dammed religious/ Mediaeval air- it just over it’s length it’s a bit too samey and unchanging for it’s own good.
