God Knows Where I Am — God Knows Where I Am(DVD)
The film focuses in on the troubled life of Linda Bishop- a homeless woman who spent the last few months of her life in self-confinement in rural New Hampshire. Bishop's body was found in March of 2006 in a vacant house- near her was a short note and a few notepads- in which she had chronicled her around three months staying in the house.
The film unfolds with a mixture of interviews- with the people who found her; the police investigated the case and her family. Her diary entries, super eight footage of her past, and wonderfully shot footage of from within the still-vacant house & its surrounding countryside, as the seasons' change. The diary entireties are read out by actress Lori Singer-who does so with such depth & sad wonder- as we slowly but surely see the unfolding of her last days- to begin with, it almost feels like she’s on some kind of ‘holiday from mankind’, but as it unfolds it becomes clear both her delusions & bone-deep sadness. The whole thing is told which such care, craft & feeling- yes, it’s a deeply sad tale- yet the way the films composed you remain both fascinated & enthralled through-out it’s nearing one hour & forty minute runtime.
God Knows Where I Am is deeply poignant, haunting & thoughtful provoking film- capturing wonderfully in the changing seasons of the New England landscape. I’d have to say this is one of the most spell-biding documentaries I’ve seen in recent memory- and if you have any interest in the human condition, I wholehearted recommend you pick up this DVD from Juno films.
