Final — 3

Final is Justin Broadrick’s first musical project, long before he became known and connected with the name’s Napalm Death, Godflesh and Jesu. 3 is the projects new release, spanning two disks. Taking in a whopping 124 minutes of experimental soundscapes of grey to pitch black ambience, mixed in with drone like elements.

There’s some great tracks through it’s duration like:Seasick, with it’s eerier neon light buzzing and cinematic underbelly. It really brings to mind  vast abandoned and decaying buildings, there’s no other movement except to continuous  flicking of dieing florescent tubes and shorting out of electrical appliances.  Negative youth feels like Napalm Death’s Scum reborn, into  sludgey dub , stretched over by murky ambient drift. The feeling of watching is like watching a dead white dawn, slowly climb it's  way over a raged ,distorted hill range.

But sadly it’s a rather hit and miss affair, too many of tracks fall into ambient and drone clichés, having little of their own identity. Which is a pity, because in places it really does conjour up an air of sinister, decaying ambience . I think half the problem was making it a double disk; there are just not enough ideas to stretch that far, it would have been far better just to putting the best stuff on a single disk.

Certainly worth checking out if your interested in Broadrick's other work or fancy soundtrack for lonesome apocalyptic wanderings.
