Fabio Orsi — Il Vento Disperderà la Schiuma

Boring Machines presents lI Vento Disperderà la Schiuma by Italian composer and electronic musician, Fabio Orsi. Available on vinyl and digital formats, this is Orsi's third release on the Boring Machines imprint. Back in 2011, the label released their first album with Orsi; Wo Ist Behle. The release was created shortly after a move from southern Italy to Berlin. On Il Vento, Orsi creates a perfect companion album, composed in transition from Berlin back to his homeland.

Il Vento Disperderà la Schiuma consists of two side-long tracks, clocking in at 20+ minutes a piece. Side A can best be described as atmospheric, ambient drone. Using layers of guitar with effects, Orsi manages to create a tapestry of light, delicate tones. Ethereal and absorbing, I couldn't help but be drawn into his trance. The lengthy piece is at once melancholic, yet uplifting. Repetitive layers weave and build, from paper thin highs to somber lows, Orsi delivers an engrossing piece that really grabbed my headspace and heartstrings.

Round 2 follows a similar trajectory of looping drones, however sounding more haunting and mysterious. Elongated drones sound more akin to the resonance of Buddhist singing bowls than any traditional guitar sounds, albeit rough and degraded. There are some discernible chords that bellow through the bright to murky resonance, but ultimately subsumed by Orsi’s focused stew of sound.

I've heard various artists with their own take on guitar-based drone, most not doing as much for my sonic palate as Orsi does. Both tracks are focused and varied enough to lull me into a trance without putting me to sleep. I also like the live sounding nature of each track. The whole album has a very organic feel. Whether in Germany or Italy, Orsi manages to tap into his environment to compose some very righteous sounds.
