Dead Body Collection & Masturbatory Dysf — The Necrophiles
The tape came out in March 2016 on German experimental/ noise label Geräuschmanufaktur- in a edition of 50 copies. And the packaging is certainly worth a mention, as it's both perverse & brutal- which of course fits the sonics within. The black cassette tape features a white pro-printed label, and this comes in a two layer cover- there's a tracing paper outer cover featuring a selection of black & white medical drawings of a penis - in various dissected states. And inside there we get a single sided fold-out, which features a colour close-up of someone penis been injected with a syringe, along with texts detailing the track listing, recording details etc. So all in all a very fitting and well put together release.
Moving on to the artists involved, and we have Serbian based Dead Body Collection, this project will need little or no introduction if you have any knowledge of the walled noise scene. The project started in 2009, and went onto release a 100 plus release- the projects sound has mostly been focused in a dense, pushing, bass lined, and unrelenting wall- craft, though they have taking stabs at ANW, and more stripped-back wall matter. In early 2016, the project decided to call it a day- so this stands as some of the last work from DBC.
The other project here is Masturbatory Dysfunction- this Seattle based project has been active since 2011, releasing coming on for twenty releases. Taking in CDR’s, tapes, and splits( with the likes of The Rita). I’ll have to say I’ve heard this projects name in the past, but (I think) this is the first time I’ve heard any of their work. Seemingly the project started off as a more mixed harsh noise project, but of late has focused in more on the ‘wall’ side of things.
So first up on side A we have the DBC track, this is entitled “Autoerotic Fatality”, and it comes in at just under the fifteen minute mark. It brings together a blend of murky billowing ‘n’ subterranean rumbling low-end, with a taut crust of thick hacking ‘n’ pelting static. The low-end creates an intensely droning yet ominous base, while the static crust creates quite a shredding yet entrancing topping to the proceedings.
Second up on side A we have the Masturbatory Dysfunction track, which is entitled “Rigor Mortis”, and comes in at the 14.40 mark. This ‘wall’ opens with a deep, crude, and billowing trench like judder- to start with this is focused & resolutely set in a single low-end tonal pummelling. But as the minutes thick by you get these jittering, juddering, and tautly skipping sub-tones coming off the focused mass- none of these are particular complex or tonally different in their feel, but they do pull you into the ‘walls’ unrelenting attack in a effective manner. Also in the later half the whole thing seems to start to slowly edge back/ blur in both speed and tonally clarity, returning more to the focused low-end judder in the last few minutes. All told the track was an appealing enough slice of crude wall-matter.
So on side B we of course have the collaborative track, and just over twenty nine minute track is entitled “Death During Sexual Self-Stimulation”. The track opens with two focused billowing tones- we have a deep earthy rumble, and a more churning/ dusty tone. To start with these both seem set in the same simple pattern, and tonal range. But as the minutes tick by the churning/ dusty noise tones seem to become more grainy & less focused- it still retains a fairly similar tone range, but it’s just become more split, hazed, and semi-fragment in it’s attack. You also seemingly get these dusty & grinding sub tones coming off this element too, and that creates the feel that this secondary element is somehow breaking down & disintegrating in the brutal rush/ dense drill of sound.
All in all this is well presented wall-noise split. I enjoyed both of the solo tracks here, though if pushed I’d say I like the DBC track better. And the collaborative track was most effective in its brutally tunnelling yet searing sub-tone splitting attack.
