Damien De Coene — DWII
Like the first Vol in this series- the clear shelled cassette comes in a clear tape case. The sleeve takes in hand drawn tape artwork, that features a selection of grim forms, layers of stark scribble, and crude lines- all having that familiar De Coene style of bleak monochrome art. Like the first Vol, this comes in an edition of 15 copies, and each features it’s own slightly different artwork.
Each track/side is untitled- the first side finds a slight bothersome & rushing low-end drone, been underfeed by a slow grim hiss. The low end seems to be in continual descent, while the hiss wavers & drifts slightly. Together these elements create a satisfying hope sapping feel- bringing together the sensation of a slowly falling into chilled & murky waters, and the creeping dread of been locked in a gassing room. As with past drone work De Coene managers to select simple, yet most rewarding textures- bringing them together in a most satisfying manner.
Flipping the tape over, and this untitled track finds a more active & aquatic rumble, with a more piercing hiss. This track feels slight more like a grim & ultimately futileness struggle- very much bringing to mind the sound of been under water as a tap, or hose continual runs- so one conjures up images of bodies been held down in a rapidly filling bath, or rapidly-panicking- then slow flay limbs in a huge pipe filled water butt. As one gets more disturbing imagery with this track, it’s less pleasing, though it’s still effective in its barrenly battering vibes.
There’s no doubt about it, De Coene under his own name & the project name of Charles Razeur, creates some of the most rewarding & skilled ultra-bleak drone matter. If you enjoyed DWI, I’m guessing you already have this- but if your new to De Coene’s extremely grim take on drone, I’d recommend picking up both this & the first Vol. Head over here to find out more, and buy direct.
