Crepuscular Entity — Orbis Tractus

Orbis Tractus is Sci-fi/ futuristic themed noise release, which moves from ambient & textured noise blends, and more searing & laser slicing harsh noise. The C40 tape appeared on Uk’s Void Singularity Recording late last year in an edition of twenty copies- and as of this review, the label still has some left for purchase.

The clear lime green cassette is labeled on both sides with the artwork from the cover, and the cover artwork features a bright & glowing futuristic cityscape- with a huge brightly
lite tower in the middle. All in all, a nice DIY presentation, and the picture goes well with the sounds on both sides of tape.

Crepuscular Entity is one of the noise projects of Portland, Oregon  based Ken Jamison of Basement Corner Emissions label( formally KV&GR/Recs), and projects Hana Haruna & Danshoku Dino. This project has been active since 2018- putting out around a 100 releases thus far.

Each side takes in a single nineteen-minute track, and first up on side A we have "Good Morning, Pyongyang!". This begins with sweeping & futuristic ambient ebbs & flows, that are edged with more shrill pitches of tone. At around the forth minute things fade back to just a simmering organ drone, then we kick back in with more brooding sustained drones that quickly start spiraling into first discordant stretches & shrill slides, before moving from electro slicing judder & seared, cluttering static grain & laser swoops, and feasting white static underfed by brooding tone stretches. All in all, it’s a good example of Sci-fi focused ambient noise crossbreeding.

Moving over to  side B we  have "Guten Abend, Portland" – and the  more sweeping-to-brooding ambient elements have disappeared, and we’re left with a sweeping & baying noisescape that shifts from clamoring & bay mids, searing and sweeping highs, and blends of textural grinds & laser slices. Once again we get the Sci-fi atmosphere present, and Jamison unfolds a rewarding selection of noise matter. It feels like the first track found one drifting & sailing in the skies of the covers futuristic city, and this track finds you swooping down into the hazed & murky neon fleck streets.

Void Singularity Recording is largely known for put out more HNW/ walled noise release- so it’s great with this release to see the label spreading its wings a bit more.
