Busted Babies — Busted Babies( Blu Ray)
Busted Babies is a deeply puzzling shot of lo-fi SOV sci-fi/fantasy regarding a group of black-winged, polka-dotted, and horned humanoid creatures. Two big-haired suited henchmen seeking an amulet, and a shedload of surreal cardboard-edged oddness. Here from Blood Sick Productions is a Blu-ray release of the 2024 film, which really is unlike anything I've seen in recent memory.
Busted Babies was written, directed, and stars Kasper Meltedhair. She has two other short credits to her name, as well as seventeen acting credits, including Hooker With A Hacksaw (2017), Beneath The Old Dark House (2022), Coven Of The Black Cube (2024), and Scream Queens Weenie Roast ( 2025).
The film runs at around one hour and twenty-nine minutes, and boy, is it difficult to formally review, as it has a loose / near non-existent narrative. It just drifts into one batch of oddness after another. We open with the lead female humanoid awaking in her mirrored/ strangely layered wall home. She moves from going to a record shop to planting cakes on the floor, before stealing a baby that turns out to be made of ice. There’s an advert shoot that keeps going wrong. A waste truck driving humanoid creature is given a package. A spell is brought for a bucket of bright green shit. There’s a street fight- where the suited men chant, as the winged/ horned man they are attacking grabs parts of his body. Folks crawl along the floor as shouty OTT acting goes on. Our heroes hang over a green light-tinted abyss, to fall through mirrored glass
The SOV filming sometimes gets stuck/ looped, there are loads of in-camera effects, the soundtrack is built around tape loops of either non-musical tones, jarring music, and unsettling tonal sticks.
I think it’s very fair to say I’m very, very much on the fence about Busted Babies- shifting between being impressed by its lo-fi/ odd charm, to finding it somewhat frustrating/ tryingly weird. As I say, it is truly unlike anything else…I guess maybe a vague comparison would be The Resident’s unmade 1970’s film Vileness Fats- but with a more punked/ weird-edged to proceedings.
Extra wise, we get a few things. Behind The Scenes ( 9.12), Outakes (5.48), Rorph Cranker ( 4.20) a weird stop motion short, The Donald Farmer Viewing Experience( 51.20), here we find the low-budget/ cult filmmaker sitting in a chair taking oddness for fifty plus minutes- he has a stuck-on chin & furry clawed arm- a very, very strange extra indeed.
If you dig both SOV lo-fi aesthetics and extremely surreal sci-fi Busted Babies could well be for you…I’d say give the trailer a watch and see if it clicks with you. Anyway, great to Blood Sick Productions putting out something so whacked-out/ ultra bizarre.
