Bubba the Redneck Werewolf — Bubba the Redneck Werewolf(DVD)

Bubba the Redneck Werewolf is a 2014 film directed by Brendan Jackson Rogers, also known for a host of spoof comedy short films including Jurassic Job Hunt and Baywatch of the Caribbean. The film stars Fred Lass as Bubba, Malone Thomas as Bobbie Jo and Mitch Hyman as the devil, and is only Rogers’ second attempt at a full-length film after his feature length debut Flashback in 2011. Bubba is certainly the more interesting of the two features, however his shorts have thus far eluded me. The film is based on Mitch Hyman’s long running comic book series and Hyman himself, as already mentioned, stars as the devil.

The general storyline is fairly straightforward. Bubba works at the local dog pound, feeding and looking after the dogs. He is in love with his childhood sweetheart Bobbie Jo, however, due largely to his lack of prospects and a general lack of respect afforded him by the townspeople she decided to leave him for another man. Bubba says he would do anything to get Bobbie Jo back, and inadvertently sells his soul to the devil. He awakes the next morning having undergone a dramatic transformation into a werewolf, he is now stronger, more confident and hairier. The devil meanwhile is terrorising the townsfolk by granting them skewed wishes. The rest of the film concerns itself with Bubba’s attempts to locate the devil and rid the town of its new status as hell on earth.

Bubba the Redneck Werewolf is a cheap, irreverent, horror comedy that belongs to the current trend for horror infused, comedy films. It is enjoyable enough comic fare, with reasonably effective jokes. The obvious comparison is with the superior Teen Wolf, and whilst this is obviously not in the same league as the Michael J Fox classic it is still worth a look. On the other hand, it has to be said that the film features some of the worst CGI I’ve ever seen, and generous lashings of splashy cheap gore effects, but this doesn’t adversely affect your enjoyment too much, and whilst it’s certainly not a B-movie classic in the vein of a Ted V Mikels or a Herschell Gordon Lewis, it’s still enjoyable enough. Bubba the Redneck Werewolf is a solid entry in the horror /comedy genre, and much more enjoyable than many contemporary titles in the same field. It’s low budget has robbed it of a 4, however don’t let that put you off it still represents 80 minutes of fun filled entertainment.
