An Innocent Young Throat-Cutter — Gli Occhi Dentro
Mattei directed over 50 films in his life time from the early 1970’s to just before his death in 2007 covering lots of diffrent exploitation genres including: zombies movies, Nazi exploitation, nun exploitation, women in prison movies, cannibal films, and a few porn meets horror movies. Gli occhi dentro(Eyes With Out A Face) was his take on Giallo genre and the plot revolves around a killer who murders baby sitters and pulls out their eyes. The killings resemble the fictional crimes from the latest issue of a successful comic book series called "Doctor Dark" which is about a schizophrenic who is a renowned professor by day and a maniac killer at night.
Anyway enough about the influence & onto the tape it’s self & the sonics inside. The Yellow C30 tape comes with fitting yellow cassette case, & inlay(featuring gory stills from the film)are all sealed inside a small yellow plastic bag(because of course Giallo means yellow in English). Side one is taken up by ‘Eyes Without A Face’ which starts out with a thick metallic rolling on corrugated steel type wall of looped sound. As the track goes on more looped static tones become noticeable at the edge of the looped wall textures & before long a film sample of bizarre warbling screams & dramatic sound tracking is drop under the wall for a moment, then this disappears & with-in a few minutes wall has returned back in full force & more powerful then ever. The rest of the 15 minute track finds the pair nicely shifting the wall of sound into slightly different variations on the corrugated steel rolling tone & more static tumbling or slowly circling tones.
On to side two & we have ‘Eyes Without A Face part 2’ which starts out with a few seconds of films dialogue before jumping into the next wall of noise. This ‘wall’ is built around what sounds like fairly rapid tumbling & falling of static rock like tones & a low down grey muffle static drone. As the track goes on it becomes more crunching static like in it’s feel & unfold. Then we stop around the halfway point for another brief & panicked female scream and dramatic music snippet before once more dropping back in another wall of sound which is built around short & tight static jitters which are underfeed by this thick drilling grey drone. The rest of the piece sees the duo nicely expand out the thick wall of static crunch & dead eye drone mater in a hypotonic manner.
So Gli occhi dentro is a nicely presented & distinctive looking release that offers up two rewarding sides of hammering, crunch & droning Giallo influenced HNW matter.
