Smell & Quim - Powerfuck [L White - 2009]

Smell & Quim are sort of like a more northern English often gonzo  & sick humour lined take Whitehouse’s brand of power electronics; with bizarre touches of working mans club varity act on acid edger’s thrown in to really mess you up. Powerfuck is the bands first album since 2004 Cosmic Bondage & for most of its run time rewardingly searing, perversely humorous ride.

Most of the albums pretty consistent & enjoyable with just a few tracks were they do noise searing & feed-back runs by numbers, but a few of my favourite moments come in the form of: “fuckseed” which finds whistling feed-back runs &  electro pulse boils  talked over by slowed  yet angered boorish northern male voice telling how he’s going to “fuck you like I’m raping you” and other insults; which comes across both threatening yet oddly comic & overloaded workingman club like in it’s attack like most of Powerfuck really. Then we have the wonderfully titled “Piper at the flaps of dawn(sex pest mix)” which has looped sped-up, camp & feed- back fucked up dance hall rhythms overrun by churning synth discharge, female moans & a male voice saying “rape, rape”. Through to the bizarre swanking comic parrot & mad sex friend pirate comic voices & lopsided noise seas shanty tone of “Sweet Tooth” which later boils-up into feedback walls with a manic voice squawking out of the sound fry “there’s too many fly in this soup”.  Onto the crude loop & chanted vocals of “My Cock Smells like Shit” with its  metallic guitar purr/ drone meets feedback sear of evil backdrop.

All told Powerfuck is an impressive, perversely humour lined & creative slice of English power electronics that will surely be dug by those who enjoy the likes of latter day Whitehouse & Sutcliffe Jügend
