The Skull Defekts - Drone drug [Release The Bats - 2008]Drone drug is one of the most unforgiving, barren and pained things The Skull Defekts have birthed yet. As the title suggest this is all about drones -but the drones used here have no nice calming or melodic qualites these are painful, pressing, neo hurting and general electro jarring and intense. The release is made up of four tracks in all lasting around 10 to 15 minute a piece, with each track been made up of a series of static, clinically electro, feed back lined drones. Through the albums 50 minute pained run there is no let-up, attempts to lighter tone ,easy off or add in atmosphere at tall- they just attack you with one vein pressing, suffocating and claustrophobic drone after enough. Here and there the noise level risers nicely to intensifying the feeling of been caged in or tied down with painful white neo in your face that’s so strong it almost blinds you, bearing down on you. The drones used through out the album go from low down and dragged static like all the way up to perching and smarting tones and everything in-between but there never made easy or pleasing to the ear- this is all about making you feel as uncomfortable and on-edge as possible. Like a lot of album’s I guess Drone Drug is very dependent on my mood when I’m feeling nihilistic, cynical and self abusing mood this fits perfectly seemingly intensifying those feelings. But then again most of the time I find it a bit too much, been too bleak, too unforgiving- you certainly have to admire The Skull Defekts for making there sound that much more painful, pressing and stripped- but you have to wonder how much further they can turn things sour. An effective slice of discomfort but certainly not my favourite Skull Defekts release. Roger Batty
