Uitgeschakeld - Kapot [Tera-AntiQu - 2015]Tera-AntiQu presents Kapot, an 80 minute full-length cassette by Uitgeschakeld. This Dutch wall noise project has been kicking it for a couple years now. I reviewed their Die Zwei Großen Europäischen Narkotika cassette a few weeks back and wasn’t exactly floored by it. That said, time has passed and with a clean slate I approached Kapot. Kapot offers 2 side long slabs of abrasive HNW. It’s actually one 80 minute track divided to fill both sides of the tape. Side A’s wall unfolds with battering ram ferocity. It’s an unrelenting stream of low end juddering. It’s all blown out and bass driven. Through the thick mass a rapid line of static cuts and slices. The piece sounds stressed, barely contained in a thick slop of low end sludge. There’s a lot of ebb n’ flow, with pockets of constrained pummeling muck to ramped up moments of flying static crunch. Despite side B being a continuation of the same track, it sounds more like rapid tribal drumming, but that could just be the trick of the wall. After 80 minutes I was sufficiently demolished. I couldn’t help but think these walls sounded more organic than your run of the mill white noise generator channeled through a bevy of effects pedals. After a quick glance of the liner notes, I see why. Kapot was recorded entirely with an old radio set, kitchen utensils, and a set of keys. I love the approach! While I admittedly was on the fence about Uitgeschakeld, Kapot has made me a convert. Released in 2015, with a limited run of 10 pieces, I’d be surprised if this can still be tracked down. If not, you can always mosey on over to the eternal recurrence bandcamp page to find a digital copy (broken up into much more digestible chunks). Hal Harmon
