The Sultans - More House Rockin' And Other Boogies [Ektro Records - 2014]The Sultans are a two piece finish project who create a raw, repetitive & stark brand of boogie rock ‘n’ blues. This 2014 on Ektro( home of loop riff based genre mixing Finish masters Circle), is a twenty three track compilation which brings together a selection of tracks from the bands career- the tracks here date from between 1995(when the band started) & 2009. The band is really very basic, minimal, and stripped backed in both its production & sound. It’s based purely around just a single guitar, and often cymbal heavy drumming- the guitar churns out locked down & repetitive rock ‘n’ blues riff’s, while the drums are set towards sparse & simple rock/ blues rhythms. The first few times I played through this compilation, it all sounded extremely similar- but over time I’ve started to notice subtle variations from track to track, sure it all sounds very much in a boogie/ rock/ blues setting, with a fairly even mid- high pace. But if your in the mood for sparse & no nonsense R’n’B this is perfect. The CD comes with fold out sleeve that takes in an interview with the band, along with a selection of press clippings, and a mini poster of the two band members. So if you enjoy boogie rock ‘n’ blues at it's more stripped, minimal & repetitive The Sultans are worthy of your time, and this comp works as a great introduction to the band. Roger Batty
