GRY SMK - Rendition [Altar Of Waste - 2014]GRY SMK is the truly bone chilling & eternally stark synth drone project of Halifax, NS, Canada based Alex Pearson (also of In Negatives, D/A A/D and runner of the Snapped In Half label). Rendition is the third release from the project, and it comes in the form of a CDR on the highly consistent Minneapolis based noise & drone label Altar Of Waste. The release features a single just under forty five minute slice of dense, oppressive & grimly head-pressing drone work. The Altar Of Waste house style clear DVD case packaging takes in a double sided cover & CDR label which features pictures of derelict & weather worn furniture- these perfectly fit the very chilling, thick & uncomfortable feeling of the drone work within. The track is fairly simple in its sonic make-up, but it’s extremely effective in the way it’s pins you down in a most bleak & pressing manner. It’s built around two maybe three elements and that’s it- we have a very cold 'n' grim sustained synth purr, and this is surrounded by a looped haze of maintained crackling noise matter. The whole thing is set on a fixed & unwavering dense path which just keeps press & press down on you- leaving you bleakly entranced through-out it’s full running time. All in all this is a most satisfying & oddly addictive slice of grim & pressing drone work, which has an almost walled noise thick-ness & depth to it. Seemingly this is now out of print with Altar Of Waste, but hopefully it will appear again at some point in either a digital or physical form. Roger Batty
