Female Paedophile - Never Safe [Breaching Static - 2014]Female Paedophile is the walled noise project of Nacogdoches Texas based Josh Doughty - also of downer synth/ noise project Funeral Parlour, and runner of noise label dampster noise. The projects been active for around a year or so, releasing a few splits, a stand alone tape, and a stand alone eight track. Never Safe comes in the form of a CDR on Breaching Static- the HNW/ noise/ experimental label of Iowa based Alex Nowacki(of Boar, I Watched You Die, etc). The CDR takes in a single slice of dark ‘n’ stark walled noise that comes in at the just over the fifty five minute mark. The ‘wall’ is built around a fairly stripped back & wintery mixture of bleak wind battered lo-fi rumbling, icy billowing , & sudden low-end focused bone chilling crackles ‘n’ snaps. The piece unfolds in a fairly buffering & weaving manner, though the textures (mostly) circle around the same patterns. The whole thing has a very cold ‘n’ stark feeling to it bringing to mind almost monochrome images of wintery storms battering almost people-less city streets. On the whole it’s acceptable enough bit of ‘wall-making’, with the fairly creative textures summoning up a chilling vibe. I only wish there was a bit more atmosphere to the whole thing, as while it keeps your attention through-out it rather lacks the real feeling of dread & fear soaked atmospherics this type of darker focused wall-making should have. It’s always great to see new artists coming into today’s fairly small & sparse worldwide HNW scene, and clearly Doughty has the ability to create ‘walls’ that are both entrancing & stark, so I’ll certainly look out for future work from this project. It’s just a pitty there hadn’t been a more tangible feeling of unpleasant-ness & foreboding to the proceedings. Roger Batty
