Goatvargr - Black Snow Epoch [Cold Spring Records - 2010]Black Snow Epoch is the second release on Cold Spring UK from the collaborative efforts of Goatvargr (Swedens Nordvargr and Goat from the US). Taking inspiration from each others prolific artistry of industrial, noise and dark ambient they unite in creating a malevolent, unforgiving world. From the first note of “Goatsbane/Scapewolf” we are thrust into an abyss of industrial pounding, torturous vocals and mechanical noise. Each piece after this only builds on that theme. It may have more of a drone or glitch influence to it as on “Bearer, Begetter, The Sovereign Wolf” or minimalist dark ambient sound as on “Goatwalking”; yet all the songs are no less harsh in their presentation. In fact the ingredients form into an all out assault by sound with Goatvargr happily at the helm.
Further on “Razed Under Cloven Hoof and Bloody Maw” the progression changes with a bit of dark wave added to the industrial heavy noise to enhance the frenzied effects. “A Black Drum Droning” rounds out Black Snow Epoch with an unnerving, barren and mysterious atmosphere. It’s frightening in its delivery, almost like a preying upon our nerves and anxieties in a psychological way.
Together their skillful ability shines with chaotic beauty. Tidal waves of sound batter our ears and nerves, but what a battle it is. We are welcomed into a world of overwhelming and unsettling darkness, and by the end of Black Snow Epoch we are not so sure we want to leave Viktorya Kaufholz
