Lovage - Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By [75 Ark Records - 2001]

LOVAGE (noun): Lovage is an herb that is said to be a benefit for relieving abdominal pains due to gastrointestinal gas. It's also been touted to reduce flatulence when consumed as a tea brewed from its roots or leaves.

Lovage is a project from, and produced by, Dan "the Automator" Nakamura of Gorillaz, Deltron 3030 and Handsome Boy Modeling School fame. The album features several music 'celebrities' like Mike Patton (now do we really need to put a list here) and Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields) doing main vocals. But also starring Kid Koala, Damon Albarn (Blur) and Charmelle Carmel (De La Soul).

Lovage has a scent of hip-hop, soul, trip-hop, film noir, lounge, pop and sounds like an erotic fantasy from an obsessed Mike Patton fanatic. The album is an erotic experience into the world of smokey lounges and satin sheets. Something that usually does not include turntables and hip-hop beats.

The album opens with an introduction by Chest Rockwell from Handsome Boy Modeling School, Ladies Love Chest Rockwell. Next up is Pit Stop (Take Me Home), a poppy song about 'love on the road'. Mike and Jennifer are a good match, their vocals suit eachother very well. Of course it's hard not to be impressed by Mike's vocals. I've never heard Jennifer before, but she sounds very erotic. My favourite song Anger Management is up next. "This is the sound of your crazy latino analyst seducing you. A lush and sleepy Spanish Harlem with a slush soul groove." One of the prettiest songs on the album, one that will totally seduce you. Kid Koala does a great job with the instrumentals Everyone Has a Summer and Koala's Lament, turntables, lounge and very retro. With Mike and Jennifer exchanging spit in Book Of The Month we find one of the better songs on the album. Lifeboat and Sex (I'm A) are not as interesting, but have some good moments. Stroker Ace is another one of those precious jewels. Bringing out the best in Mike and Jennifer, slick beats, trumpets, is there any more you can wish for?

According to Dan Nakamura Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By is best experienced with a lover, but listening to it alone also gives you some pleasure, especially to the ears. The album is interesting and has some great songs on it. There are a couple of dull moments, mostly during the intermezzo's with several 'sexologists'. But that does not take away all the good stuff on the album.
